            ABOUT US 

                              Making Change Possible

Established in 2023, the Mississippi Hispanics in Higher Learning is an organization dedicated to empowering students to enhance their college readiness. This is achieved through educating students on various aspects of the college search and application process, including learning test taking skills through practicing standardized tests, mastering essay writing, providing free tools for essay revision, advice on resume development, and the cultivation of leadership and public speaking skills. 

MISSION STATEMENT

The core mission of this organization is to collaborate with Hispanic minority students in Mississippi, offering valuable guidance on college and scholarship opportunities to stimulate their enthusiasm for pursuing postsecondary education. Furthermore, we aim to inspire Hispanic students to explore prospective professional careers in their future endeavors.

FACTS

Hispanics make up 3.6% of the population in MS (Census Bureau)

  • As of 2020, Hispanics are now the largest ethnic minority in the U.S at 19% (Pew Research Center)

  • By 2060, Hispanics are projected to make up 29% of the population (Census Bureau)

  • 32% of Hispanics (18-24 yrs. old) were enrolled at least part time in college as of 2021 (Pew Research Center)

  • One fifth of all postsecondary students identify as Hispanic (Pew Research Center)

  • As of 2019, 31% of Latinos aged 25-29 had an associate’s degree or higher, compared to 56% of White students of the same age, and 21% of Latinos aged 25-29 had a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared to 45% of White student of the same age (Postsecondary National Policy Institute)

  • Hispanic workers make up 17% of total employment across all occupations, but only 8% of all STEM workers (Pew Research Center)

  • As of 2021, 26% of employed Hispanics worked in management, professional, and related occupations, compared to 58% of employed Asians, 43% of employed Whites, and 35% of employed Blacks (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics)

  • Despite some promising signs of progress, educational outcomes for Latinos have not improved dramatically in the last 30 years. Latinos continue to have low academic achievement and the highest dropout rates in the nation, as well as low college preparatory course enrollment and postsecondary attainment.
